Our Story

WE BUILT
WHAT WE
NEEDED.

Three high school students. One common frustration. A platform built to fix it.

"Too often, high school students are told they need experience to get hired — but can't get hired to gain experience."

The Problem We Solved

Student Strivers is a student-run platform created to help motivated high school students gain meaningful, real-world work experience before graduation.

We connect driven high school students with local businesses offering part-time jobs, internships, short-term projects, service roles, and volunteer opportunities designed specifically for students.

Our goal is simple: make early work experience accessible, practical, and impactful. We connect students with employers — once that connection is made, the hiring decision and all arrangements are between the student and employer directly. Through these opportunities, students build responsibility, confidence, professional communication skills, and time management.

Student Strivers is more than a job board — it's a bridge between ambition and opportunity.

HOW TO
APPLY

Everything you need to know to land your first job as a high schooler.

01

Writing Your First Resume

Don't panic if you don't have much experience — everyone starts somewhere. Here's what to include:

📋
Contact Info — Name, email, phone, school, and grade. Keep it clean at the top.
🎓
Education — Your school name, expected graduation year, and GPA (if above 3.0).
🏆
Activities & Awards — Sports, clubs, student government, honor roll. These count as experience.
💼
Any Work Experience — Babysitting, lawn mowing, tutoring, volunteering — all fair game.
Skills — Microsoft Office, Google Docs, social media, languages, coding. List what you know.
💡 Keep it to one page. Use a clean, simple font. No photos or graphics needed.
02

Writing a Cover Letter

A cover letter is a short note (3–4 paragraphs) explaining why you want the job. Here's a simple structure:

Paragraph 1: Who you are and what job you're applying for.
Example: "My name is [Name] and I'm a [grade] student at [school]. I'm excited to apply for the [role] position at [company]."

Paragraph 2: Why you're interested in this specific company/role.
Show you've done your homework — mention something specific about the company.

Paragraph 3: What you bring to the table.
Mention 2–3 relevant skills, experiences, or qualities. Be specific.

Closing: Thank them and express enthusiasm.
Example: "Thank you for your time. I'd love the opportunity to learn more and contribute to your team."

03

Nailing the Interview

Interviews feel scary but they're really just conversations. Here's how to prepare:

🔍
Research the company — Know what they do, who they serve, and why you want to work there.
👔
Dress professionally — When in doubt, overdress. First impressions matter.
Be early — Arrive 10 minutes before. Being late is an instant red flag.
🤝
Firm handshake, eye contact, smile — Simple but powerful.
Ask questions — "What does a typical day look like?" shows genuine interest.
📧
Send a thank-you email — Within 24 hours. Most candidates skip this — you won't.
💡 Common question: "Tell me about yourself." Prepare a 60-second answer: who you are, what you're good at, and why you want this job.
04

Common Questions

Do I need a work permit?

In New York, students under 18 typically need working papers. Ask your school guidance counselor — they can issue them for free.

What if I have no experience?

Everyone starts somewhere. Focus on your skills, school activities, and enthusiasm. Employers hiring students expect limited experience.

How many jobs should I apply to?

Apply to everything that interests you. Don't wait for the "perfect" one — volume increases your chances.

What if I don't hear back?

Follow up once via email after one week. Keep it short: "I wanted to follow up on my application for [role]. I'm still very interested."
